September 6 - 9

Hello again, Families!

We're having minor technical difficulties in Room 103 as we begin our school year. Our classroom Netbook hasn't been able to connect with Thoreau's wireless network making it impossible to update our blog in the classroom. So, unfortunately this week our two bloggers, Rosa & Tabius, weren't able to add to our blog. Bummer! The good news is that we should be up and running no later than next Thursday. The bad news is that I'll be out next Friday (for my brother's wedding) so we may not have a student post until the following week. We shall wait and see what happens...

This week we spent a lot of time getting to know one another (especially our newest friends) and becoming reacquainted after a long summer vacation. Many of us remembered to bring our "It's in the Bag!" homework on Friday which helped us share even more interesting things with our friends. I learned that our friend Cameryn loves to measure things and that Trieana loves to take pictures!

We also talked a lot about expectations. Expectations in the classroom, hallway, playground, cafeteria and bathroom. The expectation at Thoreau is that we use "Zero Voices" when we are in the hallway and bathrooms--no exceptions (adults included). Please ask your second grader to show & tell you about the expectations posted on our classroom windows Tuesday night at the Open House.* This class is FULL of super smart students who've shown me this week that they understand what behaviors are expected of them by demonstrating them in all of the different environments at school. I am so lucky to have such remarkable students!

V.I.P. Folders: Thank you for helping your second grader be responsible for bringing home and returning their V.I.P. Folder every day. This is to ensure communication from school to home (and back again) is happening on a daily basis. It also teaches your second grader responsibility. Most of us remembered our VIP Folders every day this week and for that each was rewarded with a Tico Ticket. Way to go, second graders!!

We celebrated Trieana's 8th birthday on Tuesday and Cedric's 8th birthday today. Both 8-year-olds brought in special (and delicious!) birthday snacks that we all enjoyed together after singing a wonderful version of "Happy Birthday." What a great way to start off our school year!

We had our first all-school fire drill Wednesday morning during music class. Our new (and wonderful) music teacher, Mrs. Whalley (pronounced just like Wall-E), informed me that a few of our friends left the building running and screaming. I couldn't believe it! So, we practiced during our recess time and wouldn't you know; we did two fire drills right in a row PERFECTLY! I don't think we'll have to practice that any more--phew!

*REMINDERS:
Thoreau's Open House is Tuesday, September 13th. The whole family is invited to join us for FREE pizza & drinks in the gym at 5:30. Then come check out Room 103 and don't forget to sign up for a Parent-Teacher Conference in November. After that, visit the Used Book Fair and get a fantastic deal on some great books! You can also visit the Scholastic Book Fair in the Library if you're looking for some newer titles.

We're collecting Box Tops and Campbell Soup labels this year. Box Tops are collected by classrooms for a friendly competition. Ask neighbors and grandparents to save them, too! Three times this year the Box Tops will be collected & counted for each classroom. The winning classroom gets a Pizza Party and passes to Pump It Up. As much as we'd like to win this friendly competition, please do not feel obligated to purchase items solely for the Box Tops. Box Tops are usually affixed to name-brand items and since we're all watching our dollars spent closely...

Before I sign off I wanted to give a shout out to Jill Karofsky, Danny's mom, who is competing in the Iron Man Race this weekend.
GOOD LUCK, JILL!!!!

Have a wonderful and restful weekend! Your second grader has worked hard this week and deserves some R&R. I hope to see all of you Tuesday night at the Open House!
